Is Democracy Under Threat? Dr. Anne Nderitu, CBS Joins Global Leaders in Brussels to Champion Inclusive Participation

Brussels, Belgium — 23 September 2024 — I joined democracy practitioners, policymakers, civic actors and international representatives in Brussels for the 10th Anniversary edition of International Democracy Day Brussels.

The engagement convened participants from diverse regions and professional backgrounds to examine the state of democracy, democratic participation and the importance of strengthening institutions that serve citizens.

For me, the occasion provided an opportunity to share Kenya’s experiences and perspectives on political participation, electoral governance and inclusive democratic processes. It also enabled me to engage with international counterparts on the evolving global democratic landscape.

A central theme of the discussions was the need to ensure that democracy remains inclusive and accessible to all. Meaningful participation by women, young people and other traditionally underrepresented groups is essential to ensuring that diverse voices are reflected in democratic processes and decision-making.

Participants also considered emerging challenges facing democratic institutions, including changing patterns of citizen engagement, barriers to political inclusion, the growing influence of technology and information, and the need to strengthen public trust in democratic institutions.

Drawing on my experience in Kenya’s political and electoral governance sector, I brought an African perspective to the international conversation on democracy. My participation also created an opportunity to exchange experiences with representatives from other countries and learn from different approaches to strengthening political participation and democratic institutions.

The 10th Anniversary edition of International Democracy Day Brussels was particularly significant, marking a decade of convening diverse voices to discuss issues affecting democracy and democratic governance.

Reflecting on the engagement, I underscored the importance of sustained dialogue and collaboration in strengthening democratic institutions and creating inclusive spaces where citizens can participate meaningfully in governance.

The Brussels engagement forms part of my broader contribution to conversations on inclusive governance, political participation and democratic institutions. It underscores the value of connecting national experiences with the wider global discourse on the future of democracy.
