I joined Chairperson Erastus Ethekon and fellow Commissioners during a consultative engagement between the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) and the Ministry of Interior and National Administration to discuss key areas of institutional coordination ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The meeting focused on issues that are central to effective electoral preparedness, including the issuance of national identification cards, election security coordination, conflict management and peacebuilding. These areas require sustained cooperation between institutions to ensure that eligible citizens are able to participate in elections and that the electoral process takes place within a secure and peaceful environment.
I underscored the importance of inclusive electoral processes and continued institutional collaboration in ensuring that all citizens have an opportunity to participate meaningfully in Kenya’s democracy. Particular attention must be given to women, youth and persons with disabilities, whose effective participation is essential to building an electoral process that reflects the diversity of the Kenyan people.
Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration, Hon. Kipchumba Murkomen, reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to sustained coordination with the Commission in supporting a peaceful, credible and well-managed electoral process. The engagement provided an opportunity for both institutions to consider areas where closer coordination can contribute to effective preparedness and timely responses to emerging challenges.
Chairperson Erastus Ethekon emphasized that elections are a shared national responsibility. Delivering a credible election requires consultation and partnership among institutions entrusted with safeguarding democracy, peace, security and the rule of law.
The engagement reaffirmed the commitment of IEBC and the Ministry of Interior and National Administration to work together towards creating a secure, inclusive and trusted environment for the 2027 General Election. Continued coordination in the period leading to the election will be essential in protecting citizens’ democratic rights and supporting a peaceful electoral process.
