The Chairperson of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), Erastus Ethekon, joined fellow Chairpersons of Constitutional Commissions and Independent Offices (CCIOs) at a high-level Chairpersons’ Breakfast Meeting to reflect on strengthening constitutionalism, safeguarding the sovereignty of the people and advancing Kenya’s democratic ideals.
The meeting provided an opportunity for leaders of constitutional institutions to reaffirm their shared responsibility in upholding the Constitution, protecting democratic values and ensuring that public institutions remain accountable to the people they serve.
Discussions underscored the critical role played by Constitutional Commissions and Independent Offices in upholding the rule of law, promoting accountability, protecting fundamental rights and ensuring that public power is exercised responsibly and in accordance with the Constitution.
As an independent constitutional institution, the IEBC recognizes that a strong democracy extends beyond the conduct of elections. It also depends on strong institutions, informed citizens, public trust and a collective commitment to safeguarding the integrity of democratic processes.
The engagement further highlighted the importance of collaboration among Constitutional Commissions and Independent Offices. By working together while respecting their respective constitutional mandates, these institutions can strengthen accountability, reinforce public confidence and ensure that the sovereignty of the people remains at the heart of governance.
As Kenya prepares for the 2027 General Election, protecting constitutional principles and preserving the integrity of democratic institutions remain essential to sustaining public confidence and ensuring that the will of the people is respected.
Ultimately, safeguarding Kenya’s democracy is a shared responsibility that calls for strong institutions, responsible leadership and active citizen participation. Upholding the Constitution remains fundamental to protecting the rights and freedoms of all Kenyans and securing a democratic future for generations to come.
